Carbon Fouled Plugs on '50 JD B

I'm fouling my Autolite 3116 Copper Non-Resistor Plugs with a WICO XH1042 Magneto after a year of single digit hours of use. I'm guessing
my DLTX 67 carb is too rich, but I'm not sure I'm competently adjusting it. Looking for some idiot proof guidance.

Those are the plugs I recommend for a Mag ignition. Other possible causes for excess carbon gas fouling are over rich carb setting,,,,,,,,Carb problems like float level and its proper operation,,,,,,,,clogged air cleaner or air inlet piping,,,,,,,,,,Choke plate not opening fully,,,,,,,,,,,low engine temps,,,,,,,,,,,excess long idle periods,,,,,,,,,,,weak spark due to other ignition problems.

Is it excess gas fouling or oil fouling???? Gas leaves a flat black sooty coat while oil is more shiny darker black and and wet looking.

Try using shutters or air curtains or t stats etc to get and keep the engine temp up to 180 or so and over, make sure the air cleaner and inlet piping arent clogged,,,make sure the choke is opening fully,,,,,,,,,make sure the ignition is in good shape good points and condensor and plug wires etc,,,,,,,,,,,,dont run the carb any richer then necessary,,,,,,,,,,,check float level

BEST THING is to get the tractor out and work it long n hard and get the temp up............

John T Im sure I missed a few but this is a start

As previously stated . If the coolant temp is not 195F-210F and If the carb is not leaned out. She will foul the plugs . Straight weight low ash oil that meets two stroke Detroit Diesel specs will also reduce plug fouling .

So, I don't have slats on the tractor - it hasn't ever had any in my ownership and I haven't found a original set priced at a good value.

I run straight 30 oil in her.

It appears to be fuel fouled - dry black powder.

I've never worked on a DLTX carburetor before. What is the appropriate (idiot proof) way to adjust it and what is the float spec?

If it smokes on acceleration cut back on the load needle, the one farthest away from you. Open throttle fast and it should just get a puff of black and clear up. Ron MN

Here is the DLX instruction sheet. Lower rt corner tell carb adjustment. IMHO don't mess with the float level unless absolutely necessary.

Hope this helps..

A bunged up air intake or filter will cause the engine to operate rich. Sometimes the choke linkage appears to be wide open however the choke blades are still partly closed.
