Hello - My late father left me a John Deere hit and miss engine and I am having a hard time identifying what type it is. Does anyone know if there some way to enter a serial number (281783) or some other type of information in an online database and get and information on it?

Looks like a nice original. Not sure what they bring today but they used to sell pretty high.

Judging from the size of the motor compared to the skids, I would agree that it is a 1 1/2 hp Model E. Engine values vary quit a bit depending on part of the country you are standing in, but the Deeres bring a premium over a lot of engines. When dealing with an old engine like this, always make sure that the valves are not stuck before trying to roll the engine over. I've seen a lot of people who know nothing about them try to roll them over and snap a rocker arm because of a stuck valve.

That is a 1.5 HP model E. I have one just like it but mine is a 1946 model (I have been told it is the last year they were made). Ray
