Did you buy the resistor update kit from John Deere? I ask because those kits come with instructions when used to replace the original
ignition switch that had the built-in resistor.
In theory, it goes like this. The original 1010s had an ignition ballast resistor built into the ignition switch. The resistor kit came
with a new external resistor and wire harness and eliminates using the resistor in the ignition switch.
When hooked up properly, power from the IGN terminal of the ignition switch runs through that resistor, and then to the coil primary
terminal. As I recall, there is a pole on the ignition switch for cranking-bypass that sends power directly to the coil primary and
bypasses that resistor you are adding.
I will also note that if your 1010 has the Delco starter motor and NOT the Prestolite, it makes things easier. The Delco has an ignition
resistor bypass built into the solenoid. Deere did not use it in the kits because the kit was made to work even if you had the Prestolite
starter.
The last time I saw on of those kits from Deere was around 1980, so things might of changed since then.
