What do you guys use for power steering fluid. I have been using the john deere fluid but have to order it and would like to just go buy some. Any suggestions?

Used to use automatic transmission fluid years ago before the
development of hy-gard. Have used hy-gard since.

Still using the special 2-cyl PS fluid. Have one tractor with newly rebuilt PS so don't want to take any chances. Buy several qts at a time to last me a couple of years.

My thoughts on the PS fluid. I have used the JD power steering fluid on my 2 cylinders for years. And I've had the components of the system apart and there is nothing really unusual about the pump or control valving that would require anything but a good hydraulic fluid. I wasn't so sure about the vanes in the steering motor. Then I acquired a 825 rollover plow. This plow uses the same vanes in the rollover motor as the steering vanes in the tractor. So depending on what tractor the plow was connected to it could have anything from motor oil to Hy-gard in it. My conclusion is good oil is the key, not necessarily JD power steering fluid. My two cents.

Deere fluid might perform better in ultra cold weather and possibly there might be something magic about it that helps the fussy control valve work smoother but in my opinion that is the only benefit to using it. We have to remember Deere first had power steering in 1953 or 1954 when hydraulic fluids were practically non existent. Back then the choices For farm hydraulics were ATF for the few automatic transmissions and other power steering systems offered in the day and engine oil. Some heavy vehicles with a torque converter even used diesel fuel in the torque converter. 1954 was 66 years ago. We have a much better choice of hydraulic fluids to choose from today. Like what was mentioned the power steering system in a two banger is a plain old low pressure low flow hydraulic system. There is really nothing special about it.
