2510 electrical problem

I put a diesel engine in my 2510 (it was
gas originally). The starter would hardly
crank at all. Figured it was because it
was the gas starter so I put a rebuilt
diesel starter on. Tried and still have
the same issue.

When I first turn the key on, the dash
warning lights come on. I push the starter
button, I get a click, then the dash
lights go out and then nothing. After a
while it'll let me try again, but with
same results. Figure its the circuit
breaker tripping.

I had gotten the wires hot when I put 1
alternator wire on wrong. A few wires in
the switch wiring harness looked semi-
melted. All the wiring is original anyway,
figure why not and I replaced the switch
harness, key switch and circuit breaker. I
cleaned up the connections at all these
points too.

Tried again today after replacing all that
and get exact same result.

Turn on key, warning lights on, hit
starter button, get a click at the starter
then dash lights off and can't try anymore
for a while, like the breaker tripped.

What do I check next? I'm stumped.

Pulled the starter back off and cleaned where it mounts and the connection again. Then it would at least crank long enough for my to put my voltmeter on the battery while cranking. Showed 12.5 volts sitting there but dropped to 6 when cranking. Stole a battery out of my truck and that did the trick!

That battery was only 2 years old!

Thanks guys!

When working with those cables. The best place for the negative ground cable is under a starter mounting bolt. instead of somewhere on the chassis.
