Looking for 4040 info

Hello all,

I am working on a book about my Dad. Call it a book about rediscovering who he was (he passed when I was 11) as I search for the JD 4040 he had. It was sold about a year after he died. For whatever reason, that was my favorite tractor to ride with him on when I was a kid. I realize I may never find it, so I am trying to find all the information on the model I can.

I will take anything on it I can find, but I do have some specific items of interest. Going into bean harvest season, Dad would convert the 4040 from its standard wide front to a two-wheel narrow front, essentially turning the tractor into a tripod. He did this for a piece of equipment he needed ONCE a year that mounted on the front (it was a bean cutter, btw). My Google-Fu has failed me in finding the appropriate narrow front, or it is right in front of me and I can't see it. Can any of you tell me which model narrow front would mount to the 4040?

FWIW, it wasn't a roll-o-matic. Of that I am certain.

Welcome to YT
4040 for use with narrow frt axle required a special convertible type steering motor under frt of tractor. Correct dual frt wheel narrow extension was marked R26860 pictured below

That's got to be it! Thanks!

I remember Dad converting to the narrow front end and back. The task was on the short list of things that would get him to use, shall I say, colorful metaphors. Even as a kid, I would have to help line up a bolt, or "go stand over there".

There is a photo of 4040

They call it 4040 vegetable.

Can't imagine switching out
that front 2x each year!

Yeah it was a total pain. And Dad had to do it for ONE piece of equipment! If I can find a picture of the kind of bean cutter I'll post it.

A 4040 with convertible front end as they are called
would be quite rare and hard to find as well as
expensive currently. Lots of guys have took to
collecting the 30/40 series and especially tricycle
front end models. I think the 4040 was the last
model ever offered as tricycle front end. What was
the tractors location when it sold? Any
documentation as far as serial number or any
photographs of the tractor?

My Mom has all the old photos in her basement, but with nnalert-19 mucking about I may not be able to get into them for awhile. I have managed to sneak out a couple albums but there aren't any 4040 pictures in them. We had to have taken some photos back in the day, I just have to find them.

As for the serial number, unless Mom trashed all of my Dad's old files it should be in there. I also seem to remember some sort of plaque that I guess came from Deere that said something to the effect of "This 4040 built for Gary Grasmick". For what its worth, there should also be one for a 4555 Dad bought new as well.

I could tell you the day and hour the sale, as well as where it was. February 17, 1994 at 10 am in Gering, NE.
