2010 Low Idle Oil Pressure

New to the forum but the 1962 JD 2010 diesel has been in the family since 1966! Anyway, we just use this guy for mowing... 20-30 hours a year. Over the may years the idiot lights went out and we put in aftermarket temp and pressure gauges. Like an idiot I noticed the gauges had failed but didn't worry as I only had an hour or so of mowing.. Then when I broke a fan belt it overheated and cracked a head.

Got it back together now. Stuck on new water temp and oil pressure gauges. Went ahead and had the injection pump rebuilt. Runs better than it has in years... pulls strong and oil pressure is 40 on cold start idle. But after running for a while (water temp 180ish) the oil pressure drops to 20. At idle the oil pressure falls to 5-8. Throttle up to 1950 RPM or so and I get 20 lbs. Next cold start I see 40 lbs at idle again.

Hot idle oil pressure seems low. Is this indeed a problem? If so I wonder if it is a new problem connected to the heat? How much pressure should I have at idle? How to diagnose and fix? Any suggestions?

If you have a gauge on it and it reads most anything around those figures you're probably OK. That means the oil pump is working. Oil when cold will always read a higher pressure. Put in a good quality 15-40 oil and run it.

Deere calls for 30-35 PSI at hot idle for a 1010 or 2010. You likely have worn main bearings. If it stays above 5 PSI and never gets lower, your engine will likely be fine for a long time. Just pretend it is a old two-stroke-cycle Detroit? Every Detroit I ever owned had a hot idle at 5 PSI.

My 1960 Deere got low oil pressure when hot years ago. Kind of like your's. The sleeves were also leaking so I tore it partly down. On mine, the crank journals were still smooth but the main bearings were very worn. I put in .002" undersize main bearings and it worked out perfect. Those slightly undersize bearings sometimes work miracles on these old engines as long as the journals are not scored or way out of round. No machining needed.

Thanks guys. I will change oil and filter an keep an eye on it. Plus I might bump up low idle speed some... It has been set really low for years.
