model A speed too fast

3-V ONE

New User
Hello, I have a 1948 styled model A with a wide front end. I recently fitted an old rototiller to it to do some work on 80" beds for some gardening. My problem is 1st gear is too fast to do rototiller work. My question is there anyway to slow down the tractor or speed up pto? Any sugestions would be appreciated, thank you in advance!!

Two cylinder tractors, any model were never meant to operate a rototiller . Find an eight foot disc or spring tooth to follow up after you plow. Still want to use the tiller, I recommend a newer hydrostatic drive tractor.

Hey,
Tractors of this vintage were never intended to do very slow creeper drive type work. They were made to pull things at a much faster speed. Even the PTO speed was barely 540 and that's if the governor was set correctly. Your going to need a newer tractor to get those slow speeds needed to run a rototiller. Good Luck!

You can change out the reduction gears on the clutch pulley and the reduction gear itself. Don't know if that would be enough for you though.

I don't know how you have attached the tiller, but if it is mounted maybe you could put the tractor in neutral and let the tiller push.. Just a thought.

I use my 1947 (late styled) A with a rototiller. I just make 2 or 3 passes. Works fine for me.
