2510/3020 question...

(quoted from post at 10:41:19 03/25/20) Can a 3020 syncro transmission be swapped with one from a 3020? I know they are similar, but are they the same?

3020 to 3020 will interchange.

According to JD parts site 2510 SR trans case(AR38411) shows to fit only 2510. Also gasket(R38339)between 2510 clutch housing & trans case only shows to fit 2510/2520

Dang Jim, why wont you let me answer the easy ones for once?

Which transmission is bad? The 2510 or 3020? Sorry if I did not read close enough.

Do you have a 3020 diesel with a good engine? Maybe sell it for the engine and find your self a good 2510 or 2520, or something a little newer.

Currently I have a 3020 with a recently rebuilt transmission that has a cracked block :(. I also have a 2510 that is reasonable, but may someday need some gear sycroniser work. Just wondering if I could put the two together...

I struggle with what to do with the 3020. It is a bit small for what I use it for, but did the job. The engine will be a big repair. On the otherhand, I know all the other systems- tranmission, hydraulic, electrical, are good.

And it seems like there is a lot of junk out there on the market.

If I could find a decent 4020, 4230, 4320 I'd go that route.

You might want to talk to Larry Anderson in Clarion, IA. He seems to be able to find a lot of nice tractors in the area you are looking at reasonable prices. He posts on this site so you may want to call him out. I bought a tractor through him. Paul

I am pretty sure the 2510 and 3020 bell housing bolt pattern is different. 3020 is a Waterloo tractor and
2510 is Waterloo with a dubuque engine.

I've heard of attaching a 2510 bell housing to a 3020 transmission. Yes, the front part is obviously different but the back portion is supposed to bolt up with minimal modification. Tim S probably would know all that is involved.

I'm not stating it won't fit BUT IMHO if 3020 SR trans could be easily mounted to 2510 clutch housing the mounting gaskets between the 2 components should be identical part numbers which they aren't.

Sounds like you have the hard part under control. The control systems between an early 3020 synchro and a 2510 synchro are pretty much the same. A side console 3020 would require a 2520 bell housing for the PTO control among other things plus power shift would have to be matched to power shift. 2520 bell housings are hard to come by but not impossible. About a couple years back somebody had a 2520 power shift rear end plus misc parts in a crate for sale on Tractor House. I wished I could have bought that for a project.
