Age of John Deere A?

I have a John Deere A that I started today for the first time!!!! It was like hearing a baby cry for the first time. I put a brand new engine, head, valves etc into it.

It doesn't have a serial number tag. Is there anyway I can figure out what year model this might be? It is (unfortunately) a non-electric start. Kind of wore me out getting it going!

Let me know what is needed to identify, and I'll be happy to take photos tomorrow and send them on.

Kindest Regards,

Ps: I now have a really nice John Deere B and a John Deere A

Is it unstyled or styled? If styled, is it a 4 or 6 speed transmission?
A few pictures can narrow it down some, but probably not exact.

Pressed steel or angle iron front frame? Round or square rear axle housings? Crankcase breather or air pump on fanshaft? Just suggesting some other markers. Pictures would help.

Will wait to see your pictures. If it's a hand start, presumably that would make it 1946 or older, which would rule out the pressed steel frame and square axles.

I'm curious as to how you correctly got all those new parts, without even knowing what year
the tractor is, and no serial number. You must be pretty good.

I pulled the old engine out and I took a photo of it. I called friends in Minnesota who gave me the name of a guy in N. Dakota. I called him and he had a new engine and head in the original John Deere box. I told him/described the kind of engine I had and he had the exact duplicate. I'm not good at all. I just had very knowledgeable people helping me. Even a blind hog finds an acorn now and them.

It is styled and has 6 gears. I found a casting by the clutch that had "38" as the ending numbers. From the parts book, I've learned that the casting was made in 1938, but the same parts were used for several years. Was too tied up today to take photos. Will take next week and forward on for you guys to look at them and give opinions.
