I posted a question last week about Babbitt vs insert type. Well, I pulled the caps off today. Haven't checked the clearance yet but found the lower nut on #2 was loose. The cotter pin was there but the nut was not tightened. I know FIL took a shim out a long time ago. He must have missed it. No apparent damage but the bolt was loose in the rod. Been like that at least 40 years.

I have had some when rebuilding them for some guys and some that iv got from sales have that also. I found out that when the person who has been working on it an remove some shims that when they retighten the rod nuts up to were the should be only to find out that it is to tight and can't turn it over. So the simple fix is to leave the one nut loose just enf to be able to turn over. I always put another shim in. Them shims in there are different thick Ness so u need to change them out to work right.
