JohnT or sparkie regulator question

Not quite the regular question, I was wondering something about regulators that came up during some rewiring of my 60. Found the light switch was powered by a wire through the L Terminal on the regulator....and it's factory that way, my original wires show it as well as the 60 service manual.

The later generic wiring diagram from Deere shows it getting power from the ammeter, which is indeed a simpler solution.

Any guesses why they'd go from the L terminal? That's a lot of extra wire.

I seem to remember that the L terminal isn't as regulated. Is it voltage regulated but not amp, so it puts out more power? One guy thinks it avoids point wear on the regulator? Dunno, thought you or others might know

Thanks!

Delco explains how the combined current and voltage regulators work in combination with 3rd brush generators in their Technical Directive 5134 manual, Pages 15 and 16 (.pdf pages 17 and 18) explain the "L" terminal.

Perhaps the DEERE wiring change came about as the era of those generators and regulators was passing???

Thank you for the quick response, and answer, as well as the link to the nice bit of reading I'll have to do!

Brandon, Ive had that question before and the way I understood it is similar to the article Bob so kindly posted. I learned if Loads were powered off the VR's extra 4th L terminal (versus load side of ammeter) it required less current having to flow through the regulator coil PLUS helped prevent possible overcharging and provided more precise charging. When a used tractor dealer I ran across all sorts of modifications to that and where the L terminal was no longer used and loads were instead fed from the load side of the ammeter as on the 3 terminal (BAT GEN FLD) voltage regulators. If I had a good working 4 terminal VR (BAT FLD GEN LOAD) I would use it as designed.

NICE info Bob posted !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! A pictures worth a thousand words...???..
