John Deere A oil for first reduction gear

How do you check the level of oil in the first reduction gear? I know there s a plug at the top of the cover. Also I can t remember what oil it takes. Is it engine or transmission oil and how much does it take?

Drain it and add one pint of engine oil. Some may say it will get oil from the main bearing anyway if you don't put any in. Don't know for sure but I always put some in.

There should be a small pipe plug coming out the side of the cover toward the bottom. I just drained mine also for the first time ever since I've owned it. I thought it was empty, since nothing came out. Turned out there was a lot of gunk in there. I started poking a wire up in there and eventually got it opened up.
