Hour Meter (Again)

First, Thanks to everyone who replied to my first post! After I got the (Hobbs) hour meter (for my John Deere R) apart, I filed the points. The points were apart, so I lifted the two latches (pic 1,2), and that allowed the silver piece (pic 3,4) to rotate back, and that allowed the points close. So I hooked it up to a 6V battery, and there was a spark from the points, and the silver piece moved down as far as it would (about 3/4"), which made the points separate, but nothing else happened. so I lifted the laches and tried it agene, same thing. So my question is am I doing something wrong? It looks pristine inside, so it would surprise me if something is really messed up in there. Any advice is appreciated!
Thanks

As I recall, when the solenoid pulls on the mechanism and opens the points it "winds up" the mainspring enough for the hourmeter to run for a minute or two.

As the minute or minutes tick away, eventually the points close and cause another "wind" cycle.

I would GUESS the "escapement" or something else in the gearing or mechanism is stuck, so the meter doesn't run and use up the energy stored in the mainspring,

I'm with Bob, points will separate during the wind up process. I had a clock apart years ago out of my Chevy pickup that worked the same way. After cleaning and oiling clock worked fine again. I don't recall how long it ran before the points made contact and "WOUND UP" again, but it was awhile. If they stayed together for very long I'd think the battery would go down too quickly.

Do you have any suggestions on what should I do to fix it?
Thanks for the explanation of how it works!
