JD 4820 Pics

For those that haven't seen it on fb or didn't get a chance to check it out at Rantoul, here are a few pics of my last build. I started with a 4620 powershift and went nuts from there, dropping in a 466, 40 series cab and pfd front axle. Lots of time, engineering and fabrication went into this. Oh and $$ too. Let me know what you think.

You did go nuts! Looks great. You added the front? Is it functional?
Correct hyd pump and shift valve housing?

Yes I added the front. Both the axle and valve are off a combine. For simplicity sake, I just made it one speed forward. I also upgraded the tractor's hydraulic pump when I did the engine swap.

Here are some cab pics. My goal was to make it as close to a stock cab interior as possible. I did use the 55 series upholstery but other than that I don't think you could see anything that looks out of place. The hyd. seat is also functional as well as the diff lock. The tractor was a 3-hyd tractor but the cab was not, so I added the 3rd lever during the process. It finished out real nice.

This looks absolutely awesome except maybe the exhaust pipe. Maybe a straight piped 4960 exhaust in there?

Very good job! That is beautiful. A basic, combination of proven parts that are legendary with U.S. Farmers. If Deere was to build these, they couldn't keep up with demand! Of course they will say, without computers, these are obsolete. Besides, there is not enough plastic on this tractor for them!!

I can see your dedication to perfection, your dedication to success. I can appreciate your hard work, and I can see the expense. This is indeed a success!!! Thank You for sharing this, and keep up the good work!!

I agree. What's fascinating to me is how well these parts get along with one another--even though they are from different models and years apart.

Also I found it incredible how forward-thinking the engineers had been on this (even though we cuss engineers most of the time lol). To give you an example, when I was working out the shift cables and getting them mounted to the base of the trans, the bracket that holds the two cables from the 4840 powershift cab bolted right to the 4620 trans housing. In other words, the holes were already there and I am not sure why but I really lucked out. All the 20s shifted with rods coming down from the dash, why or how would they know to put holes for a cable mounting plate there. Hmmm. Perhaps the 4630PS was already in development when that trans came out. I just found it quite interesting.

The forward thinking of the Waterloo designs was very good back in the old days,, and there are still some Bosses on 3010/4010's that i have never seen used,,,and wonder why they were there??? I would pay money to see and discuss some of those old ideas that did not make the cut....

That is awesome! The 8RX that just came out has me smitten but I would dump a new gal like that for this machine any day. That chrome stack looks amazing.

Thanks!! Some ppl don't like my chrome pipe lol. I actually put a lot of effort into that sucker. It's 6" down to 5" and then I had a custom donut welded in the bottom with a piece of 4" with a factory style flare so I could use the factory style clamp and not just a U clamp. The tractor's exhaust elbow doesn't quite line up in the center of the oval hood hole, so I had to offset the 4" pipe a little to one side and rotate it to get the best fit--then weld the big pipe so it was turned straight out to the side. Could have kept the muffler but thought that big pipe would make it stand out.

4020 floorboard holes for parking brake shaft on European models.
Same as parking brake boss cast in back of 1020/2020 transmission
case that we didn't know what it was for back in the day.
