520 fan shaft

Shaft not turning when engine is running. Was doing a hayride and tractor got really hot. Tractor dieseled when I shut it off and turned the gas off. Don?t know if fan shaft quit running and caused the tractor to get hot or something else caused it to get hot and the dieseling caused damage to the fan shaft. My shop manual is just general info and not to specific so I?m not sure what to do first. Can the bevel gears be checked without removing the governer and power steering pump? How would you remove the metal lines from the power steering pump without rounding off the brass fittings? Don?t know what?s wrong but looks like it?s gonna be difficult to repair

The splines in the fan shaft are stripped. When the fan stops turning so does the water pump and the engine gets hot.

Might be the friction discs in fan hub gave up.
Or the big spring is weak that holds pressure on the discs.

Try a little troubleshooting skills. Ture the fan by hand to see how easy it spins on the shaft. It shouldn't turn very easy. Start the tractor up and try to determine if the fan shaft is turning. If it isn't, your problem is probably in the governor gears. If you have to remove the fan shaft, it is recommended you remove the governor and fan shaft as one unit and when you put it back together, try to mesh the same teeth on the gears to reduce gear noise in the governor.

take your hand and turn the fan,if it turns with no restriction you probably just need friction disc, otherwise you may have a bad coupler or shaft or ears

The fan turns free but if you push it toward the engine it will not turn free. With engine running fan and water pump do not turn.
