4020 shifter question

I have a 72 model jd 4020 with the synchro tranny. When I shift directly into fifth gear there is nothing there. If I take the shift lever down to reverse then back up to fifth it goes right in gear. Is something out of adjustment or just loose linkage?

Worn linkage and/or out of adjustment. Watch the drum that is moving with the lever, it is probably going past where it should stop when shifting to 5th. When shifting up from reverse, it overtravels the other way and lands where it is supposed to. If you shift it carefully you can feel the detent and determine if the drum is centered or needs adjustment by changing the length of the rod. If it is centered but the lever is loose in the drum slot, I like to weld up the lever so it just fits the slot and prevents overtravel.

Need to get the manual and adjust the linkage the way it says and that will fix it had a 5020 the exact same way

Some times the area where the "Latch" spades into will wear and not hold the drum in place,,I know this idea is risky, but I remove the pin and put a 3/8" hard bolt in and gently tighten it till it squeezes tighter onto the latch,,it only takes a little,,"But" you also stand a chance on cracking the holder...I have been doing this when I re-bush the shifters,,so far I have not broke one...knock on wood ;>)
