Determine if 430 Valves or Rings are Bad

In an earlier post I told a sad story of the throttle shaft breaking while bush hogging (I use the 430 in rough stuff because of cast iron oil pan and no hydraulic lines to break). Engine ran away to very high rpm before I could shut off.
After repairing carburetor I now found I do not have the power I originally had. Found almost no compression in number 2 cylinder. In the old days we poured oil into the cylinder and if compression improved it was a ring problem. Tractor starts and runs good -- just no power.
I have another 430 for parts that I think had a valve job done not too long before being retired for parts.

My question is how can I determine if only the valves were damaged or I need to do a complete overhaul??

Take the valve cover off and see if the pushrods are in place and the valves are moving.

A pushrod may have got out of place when t over revved.

I would check the valve lash on them because alot of high riving the exhaust valves will stretch and hole them open. If u can make a fitting to put shop air in the spark plug hole and listen at the exhaust or intake for leaking of air. More likely you just stretch the exhaust valve stem.

Have you adjusted the load screw on the carb after you took it apart and repaired it? Are you sure the compression was good on #2 before the throttle shaft broke?

Didn't know a 430 had a cast iron oil pan. Are we talking a JD430 here?

Time to remove the engine and tear it down to every last little piece and inspect .
As a minimum the valve train will be worn, sprung, bent and smashed . Then again at that age it is due for new valve springs, guides , seats , cam regrind/update and follower regrind. Possible bent valves and bent pushrods too.
Could be marks on the tops of the pistons from hitting valves . And possibly bearing damage due to being starved for lube oil .
A late 440 industrial gas has several updates over the agricultural 430 engine .
