Impulse lugs on B magneto

Late model JD B at State Ag Museum would not fire on left side when cranking.
Took Wico X mag off and the weighted lug on one side would not stick out to catch.
Sprayed it with PB Blaster and it would work some of the time using pliers while it was in my vise.
Got it to crank when reinstalled but it does not always do so.
Anything else I can do to make the weighted lug work better?

Just had a Wico C fail same way. Look at the stop plate where the arm hits and is supposed to hold there until the cup forces the arm off it allowing it to spin. Mine was worn enough to hold the arm for a little bit but would slide off before being fully wound against the spring. Mig welded and remade the contour. Just put it back on the tractor this afternoon and got it started. I have used this B for mowing for the last 12 years, always was an easy starter, then this summer, just no start. See if that is your problem. Probably the reason lots of mags get trashed just a simple fix.
