Looking at buying an 8630 have
only seen pictures.The seller
said it has a hydr.leak on back
half.Is there something major
this could be?I know it could be
simple but looking at the worse
case.

That vitage left bad taste in many owners mouths like the famous 1010 did, beware parts high and prolly obsolite before long.

All hydraulics on the back half of an 8630 are EXTERNAL with the partial exception of a three point hitch (if it has one).

Will be interesting when you post back as to what the REAL story is!

It has a 3pt.at this time the
guy is busier than heck with
harvesting and all gonna give it
a couple weeks and follow up on
it and take a look at it

I have been into 8630's since the beginning,,and yes they do have some bad points and good ones... the leak they are talking about "could" be where the trans case meets the drop case,,I have had several with the gasket some how working out there even tho the bolts are tight,, I never fully under stood this...it is an easy split to change it out and I always use 3M Super weather strip adhesive on the gasket when going back together, some bad points are the oil pump/cam gear failure after 7-8000 hours ( a late 8640/8650 engine takes care of that) and when the tractor Osculates extremely and hits the front stops hard they can break the crank shaft this is more prevalent in rolling land tillage... the front axle is like a truck rear end it has oil independent of the transmission,,over time the front pivot seals wear and it will leak oil while your running..but not while it's setting,, this gives you a fault sense that there is no leak happening,,and will cause a major failure,,I recommend checking the front axle oil at least every other day when working hard ( there is a way do help keep this leak area in check)...They were in the top of the heap in that time period, they are well balanced, have a good strong 300 HP (but no match for a 450 hp unit),,they have a good cab and the AC will work well, most of them came with 3pt ,Live PTO and triple remotes,,you have good vision all around them also.

Thanks for your expertise I plan on using it for recreation never really work it.Is that a recent photo or one from back in the day.

It's from a couple years ago..I use to baby sit about 50 of them,,not too many of them around here now..I have seen about every thing that can happen to them...

just one..into the transmission..the only one in my area and it hasn't been here long,,,they seemed to have head issues on the engine..

Tim,I'm looking at an 8630 (pictures only)it has that hydr. leak, hub duals good 18.4 34s good sheetmetal, missing grill screens??has 3pt. runs good idk the hours yet can get it for 4000 what's your opinion? thanks

They can be a money pit, no question about that..Hours on the engine mean a lot,,and what it did before as far as work plays into it too..a lot of them had 50 series engines installed, that is also a plus.My Brother and I bought one new in 1979,,worked the crapp out of it..and yes it saw the tool box many times...

If he wasn?t a high priced part he should buy a case as far as obsolete do you have knowledge about that ? John Deere has better parts support than about any brand
