4440 steering metering valve leak

Calling Tim S,
Going through this 4440 column and valve: new thrust washers, bearing, bushing, and seals. Valve itself seems ok, leak appeared to be between the column and plate/valve. Upon removal & disassembly I think I found the cause a booger weld fix to a broken column pivot mount that was not ground down and did not allow the plate & valve to mount flush to the column. My question is the tech manual shows no gasket between the valve, plate, and column. Should I put gasket rtv or copper spray when I reassemble? I fixed the booger weld and flapper wheeled it smooth but that not precision leak free surface.

What about the rubber seal between plate and valve? Seal goes in first and then a washer. Did this valve have all screw on JIC fittings or was there one with a hose clamp? If so you should replace the barb fitting with one like the others.

No gasket used there,,the seal is supposed to take care of the oil leakage,,some times the upper thrust bearing in the top of the column wears and allows the shaft to come up out of the seal (it does not go in very far to start with),,so if you have too much end play it will come up far enough to miss the seal, als one of the fittings on the bottom of the valve has a check ball in it, when this fails it lets too much oil into the meter pump,,and then if the steering brick out under the hood is getting sticky it will make the meter pump work too hard to complete the steer processes.. just some things to think about...

Mine already had the jic return line. I installed new column
shaft bushings, thrust washers, thrust bearing, column seal
and valve seal. I put grey oil resistant rtv on plate, column
when I reassembled it. Installed it today and no leaks thus far.
Thanks for the advice/ knowledge
