brakes on 430U

Just got done putting new brake discs plus seal and gasket on quill on JD 430U. Old discs weren't worn that much considering this is a 1959 or 60 tractor that has had quite a bit of use. Old discs were glazed over and possibly had oil on them. Learned some "tricks" on second one putting final drive back on but suspect I won't need to do job again. Not much in JD service manual, job was actually covered beter in IT manual but now I have service manual for any other problems

One trick I learned is to make a couple of temporary long "alignment pins" to thread into the top bolt holes where the final drive bolts fasten to the case. Pins are just long bolts with the heads sawed off. The top holes on the final drive will slide along the pins and make it fairly easy to align the splines on the shaft. Well, almost easy. Still got to jiggle things around a little, but it's not too bad.

I have done that on other applications such as a split for clutch work. My problem was the in ner brake disc kept dropping off the splines when I tried to align actuating setup. I ran some small wire through hole at top, in front of disc and out hole in bottom and fastened it so I could pull it oput before it was completely together but held while getting actuator plates aligned on quill unfortunately I fought with it quite a while before coming up with this
