John Deere 430 (old farm tractor)

My JD 430 farm tractor has a 12 volt conversion with a 12 v coil having internal resistor. Was running and quit because wires on back of instrument panel came loose. Please help. I need a wiring diagram. Dave

J, Thank you very much for the link to the wiring diagram for the model 40 as originally built. My tractor has been modified (in its past days) to a 12 v system (no longer 6v), has an alternator and not a generator, and has a 12v coil with an internal resistor. Thanks again. Dqave

The 40 wiring diagram should give you the basics you need for things behind the dash. Having an alternator now it would most likely be negative ground instead of positive ground, you didn't say which ground you have. The 6 volt coil didn't use a resistor either. Wire from the ignition switch to the coil now should go on the positive terminal of the coil, negative terminal has the wire to the distributor. Starter was operated by a pull rod if I remember right, so it needs nothing. The wires on the ammeter would on the opposite terminals from what is shown in the original diagram as part on changing to negative ground. Oil pressure and temperature gauges were mechanical. Any lights should be ok connected as originally shown. Just my thoughts for the basics, I had a 430 crawler and this covers all that was behind the dash of it.

As for the alternator, you need to provide details of what it is, as could be one of several and the wiring would vary depending on what brand/model alternator, internal or external regulator, and the conversion and who did it. Some would only need a wire from the alternator battery terminal to the ammeter, nothing else in the dash area.
