High reverse speeds on 60,50 and A

The high reverse speeds on these tractors makes them almost impossible to back up when trying to hook up equipment , or doing work in reverse like using a back blade or snowblower or bush hog. My question is, is there a way that you can can change out some gears on these models to cut the reverse speed down?

(quoted from post at 13:05:40 10/10/19) I never thought those models were that fast unless you had a 2 stick A model ?

The late model A has reverse speed of 3.5 mph, the 60 3.0 mph. I would like to drop those in half if possible.

(quoted from post at 15:21:24 10/10/19) Didn't you buy an Oliver to use on the snowblower ?

Yes i have an 1800 that I have my snowblower attached, but I just don't like those fast reverse speeds in my JDs and would like to change them if possible. I spent 2 hours this year trying to hook up a #5 mower to my A. Because of the high reverse speed and no power steering, it took for ever to get it aligned up.

Years ago we used a 60 to load equipment at our
Dealership it was too fast in reverse so we added a
cotton picker gear in it gave it about 4 reverses made a
weird shift pattern

I have a 50 and it's not THAT fast in reverse. Just remember there is a throttle so slow the engine down. The 2 cylinder engine will idle very slowly and that is the correct way to use reverse. I've hooked a No.5 mower to mine many times and I actually enjoy doing that. The 50 Operator's Manual says reverse speed is 2 1/2 MPH with 38 inch tires. Remember that's at full throttle.

My A seems much faster than my 50, definitely gets my attention when it is in reverse, the A has the high/ low lever, the 50 is a straight 6 speec

Like 55 50 Ron said pull the throttle back. Two bangers are made to run slow. When I Bush Hog in reverse in close quarters with the 630 I pull the throttle back to just above idle and the grass still gets cut. If your tractor wont run at slow throttle the carb or governor or both needs attention.

52 A i got on 13.6x38 at idle backs up slow. I
see people on 2 cylinders start em n push wide
open when they move.if you must do that governor
is out of adjustment, carburator set wrong or
dirty ignition not right. If a 2 cylinder runs
pop miss smoke pop miss its not right.it should
settle down to a smooth tick tick tick kinda idle

The 50's transfer of the gear shift lever from the left to right segments of the lever's path does the same thing internal to the
transmission as moving the High/Low lever does on the older John Deeres.

A jumpy clutch will also make the reverse speed seem twice as fast as it really is. Guess how I know that.

My 51 A always ran good and idled slow but still hard to back into a hitch. As soon as you touch the clutch the gov kicks it and it lurches. Also hard to push the clutch lever while looking backward.

Fought hooking up implements in reverse alone for years with my 60. I've since learned it's just so much easier to have a second person
help. You just have to get them to stay free of the area until you give the ok to step in. Slight nudges on the hand clutch and idle speed
helps. It's ridiculous that reverse is so fast. I compare it to about 3rd gear in reverse. Some say it's like 2nd....dunno!
