Working on my uncles 4010 thats hes trying to sell, it ran last year but has sat since, brand new batteries, we have power to the starter, neutral safety switch is good, all wires test good, the ignition switch is good as well as a brand new solenoid, still doesnt even turn over... no click, no sound, nothing! When I try to short it across it spins the starter, and the one time I was jiggling my screwdriver around trying to get it to spin, and it did crank over, just when we try with the key nothing, lights are strong, just the starter does nothing while trying with the key, any suggestions? We are completely stumped, thought id come here before having mechanic come and pay that bill, has a front end loader thats down, so pull starting/bringing it in would be difficult, as well as where it is, its in a bad spot to be pulled out of, so again any suggestions is much appreciated before we try to load it/bring a mechanic over! Thanks!

Is tractor electrical system 24 or 12 volt?? Are ""NEW batteries"" attached to tractor correctly? Have you checked voltage of both new batteries? Have you cleaned/tightened all 4 battery cable connections? It's possible a battery cable is corroded inside of rubber insulation not sending enough voltage to starter.

I can't envision how tractor could be parked where it couldn't be towed out either forward or reverse!!!

To tow start going forward route tow chain/strap under bucket then when chain//strap is tightened bucket will raise off ground if control lever is placed in float position.

I had a battery cable on mine that looked like new. On the battery clamp end there was an ever so slight wobble between cable and battery clamp end(not a bolt on clamp, factory style). Had been that way twenty years and I was only getting half voltage....

I could hold tension on cable, turn key on, then turn lights on. If I let go of cable, lights would go out. Happened to be a ground(12v), cheapest repair yet. It's amazing what two 12v batteries will do compared to just one running the starter.

I wouldn't have noticed it had I not tried to start tractor with one battery disconnected, and when doing so realizing it was cranking the same as always. Hooked up right battery and disconnected left battery, nothing. Both brand new batteries. Replaced faulty ground cable and it's like I had a while new tractor(or rather starter).

Brand new as in bought them both a couple days ago, have checked voltage, and continuity through all wires, and I didnt say its impossible to pull it out, just it would be difficult with a loader down. 24v, hooked them up how the old ones came off, nothing has been touched since it ran last. Just now new batteries, and a new solenoid

Tightened and cleaner the cables when we replaced the batteries, my uncle had an older gentleman come over yesterday who has been working on older jds for longer than ive been alive, hes stumped too! Probably something we just arent seeing, might be time for a mechanic

Did you charge your new batteries? My new batteries were from June/19. Put them on my charger, they were initially ~54% charged. Instead of buying my 3rd set of strongbox batteries, I went cheap this time and bought a pair from O'Reilly.

(quoted from post at 07:24:54 09/27/19) That does have a push button start doesn't it? Have you checked the button?

It has a key, we changed the ignition switch too the other day and still nothing

And we did have the charger on them too when we trying to get it start, left it on them for night and still nothing the next day, but its absolutley nothing at the starter, it has power, but no engagement at all, no clicks, no humming, nothing when using the key, when i short it across like i said it cranked it over so the starter is good, not sure because all the wires test good, power to the starter, switch is good, and new solenoid, must be something im missing

Have you checked continuity on neutral start circuit including operation of neutral start switch by gearshift quadrant?

Yup, tried that yesterday, all checked out, wiggled the gear shift around as well to be sure, still nothing. It seems like it would be something like that, thats just keeping it from turning over but the switch is good

I would take the cowl off that has the handles on it. put gear shift in park and reach in where that neutral thing is and pull it toward the gear shift. just making a tighter contact. we used to do that to a 3010.
also, when you tried to use the screw driver procedure, you said it turned over. did it start then?

(quoted from post at 04:53:47 09/28/19)

I think im going over there today so ill give that a try, with the screwdriver, i was trying to take the solenoid off, as I was putting a new one on, and when I touched the wrench from one of the bolts that held the solenoid bracket on to the post on the starter thats about half way down the side of the starter beside the engine, (by accident) it spun the starter but didnt engage, then I was trying it again with a screw driver after i put the new solenoid on, and I could just get it to spin it, I was wiggling it around and must've touched something else when with a bunch of sparks it cranked it over, wasnt sure what I all made contact with, but after that I could still get it to spin, and hes trying to sell it, he used to have a few cows, but they built a new house, just like a mile away, no use for this tractor anymore, a lot of cattle in the area and a great tractor for that especially with the loader, someone already wants it but we cant get it started lol, so if we can get it to crank with the key, then we can move onto it starting or not

Also ran a new wire that runs from the solenoid to the ignition switch the other day to be sure it wasnt the wires and still nothing
