1988 4050 MWFD Clutch Housing Leak

The saga of the 4050 continues...

In the images above (I couldn't get them to upload to this site, despite using the image uploader many times in the past), you can see where a previous owner has used some kind of putty to attempt to stop this leak. It's a pretty substantial leak, and appears to be leaking even when the tractor isn't running (the oil spot on the dirt floor of my garage has gotten bigger and bigger as the tractor has sat the last two weeks).

What could be the cause of this leak, and will I need to split the tractor in order to fix it? I have the I&T Manual (of which I have read a substantial portion, even with my limited technical and mechanical knowledge), but while I've split a tractor before, it was an 841 Ford, and nowhere *near* the size nor complexity of this machine.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

The leak is from the pto clutch shaft. Sealed by O-rings on the shaft which is held in by a snap ring, plug, and shims. The plug wears into the snap ring and allows too much end play in the shaft and bearings that support the pto clutch. It will require a split to remove the shaft and replace the O-rings and shim up properly. Someone tried to just seal the plug externally. Not an uncommon problem with those models.

Thanks for both the attempt and success of posting my pictures. I have no idea why it's no longer working for me.

In any case, I appreciate the advice. I was afraid a split was in my future, but was hoping it wouldn't come to that. While I've got the tractor split, what else should I "do" while I'm (or my mechanic is) in there? There is a (probably separate) PowerShift issue (info linked here https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1404234&highlight= and here https://forums.yesterdaystractors.com/viewtopic.php?t=1405652&highlight=) that I will be looking in to before I initiate a split, so I may end up dealing with both these issues while I'm in there.

The rear PTO seal also leaks--could it be related to this front PTO leak?

Thank you all!
