440 crawler

is it at all possible to bypass the reverser on the 440 or make something else that works as I hear they are expensive to rebuild and not that reliable?

440ICs and 440ICDs (you didn't say which yours is) were available without reversers. The parts catalogs will show you the parts needed. Whether you can find those parts or not, is another story. There are some parts for the reversers around, but not plentiful.

As far as reliability I think they were fine if used properly and maintained. I didn't have any problems other than doing a couple clutch adjustments over the 35 plus years on the one I had in a 430C. They are not hydraulic reversers. I think most of the problems with them come from misuse when people shift them without using the clutch; along with not being adjusted properly.

Are you having issues with yours or just trying to look ahead?

I have heard the same tales about them giving troubles. BUT when we owned a 440 that was about the only thing that did not give any troubles was the reverser !

We converted many back when I worked at several Deere dealers. I wish now I had saved all the old reverser parts I had thrown out.

420 had a very weak all gear reverser. But the 440 had a wet-clutch reverser that was pretty rugged. If you have the wet-clutch reverser
with the over-center engaged pressure-plates, why not keep it?

Best bet if you really want to convert is to find a parts machine. Again though, the 440 reverser with the wet-clutches was a good setup.

I don't think there were many problems with the reverser as long as you used the clutch and stopped before using the reverser. They weren't made to "shift on the fly".
