Carb or ignition problem on 520

Tractor runs rough buts smooths out when choke stays out a little bit. Is it a carb problem or ignition problem or a little of both.

I've had a JD 60 act up and pull the choke out and it helped. Well it turned out to be a bad condenser. So it is not always a carb. issue.
Try hooking up a timing light and mount it to where you can see it and look for irregularities as it acts up. May help from chasing the wrong thing.

You simply need to trouble shoot a bit.
#1 check that you have a good blue/white spark at the plug wires that jump a 1/4 inch gap or more.
#2 pull the carb drain plug and make sure you have a good steady flow of gas that will fill a pint jar in less then 3 minutes.
#3 when was the last time you service the air cleaner and dumped the mud and water out and filled with fresh oil

I had similar issues with my 630. I tried everything to no avail, short of buying all new parts. My older brother, a mechanic of 50 plus years who can fix anything, took a look at it and found that someone had installed the wrong points....it ran well at idle, but at higher revs, one side of the points would actually ride up slightly, such that the point gap became erratic. Slowed down, and they went back in place. The correct set were put on and it ran like new. Sometimes best to admit defeat and let the pros at it. Cost me only a set of points and a beer...plus a chunk of my pride!lol

If pulling the choke out helps hot or cold engine, it's a air induction leak or carb problem.....

Worked on the points just a bit and rough adjusted the carb. Cleaned out the air cleaner. With all that it?s running pretty good now. Thanks for the input
