John Deere H Steering shaft

I am restoring an H and I have it running and should soon be ready to paint it. I have noticed the steering shaft has the paint worn off of it where it goes through the hood and where it rubs against the exhaust pipe. I had to get a different hood, so at first, I thought the dimple in the hood wasn't deep enough, then I looked at my old hood and saw where the paint was rubbed off of it too. Is there a fix for this or is it a common problem on the H's?

Thanks for the advice.

I have seen them rub the muffler too.
The shaft could be bent. Does it rub all the way around
or just one side? Is the mast loose or bushing and shaft
worn enough to let it run too low?

Both the muffler and the hood are wearing a ring all the way around the steering shaft. The shaft does not appear to be bent. I assume the mast you refer to is the steering shaft support with the loop at the top that the steering shaft passes through. The JDH parts manual says there is supposed to be a bearing and a bushing that the shaft passes through. The loop on mine is much larger than the shaft, so the shaft wobbles freely in it.

Is there an actual roller ball bearing or are they calling the loop the bearing and it's supposed to have a bushing in it?

The shaft is much smaller diameter where it passes through the shaft support loop.

Does this help any?

That's probably your problem. There is supposed to be a bushing
in that housing. A new bushing won't work unless you do something
about that egged out housing. Then the worn shaft might still be a
problem.
You might be able to find both from a salvage yard that are better
than yours.

Well the housing is not egged out, so I hope the bushing will fit tight. I did, however, notice the steering shaft is smaller diameter where it passes through the bushing. Is this normal, or is my shaft that worn?

Thanks again.

I remembered to look at my H. Steering shaft has lots of clearance between it and the hood. Muffler is gone. Steering shaft looks to be centered in the hood notch. The aft shaft support loose bushing can be repaired--JB Weld is your friend for this. Maybe even make the bushing out of JB and finish it to size. After a few weeks, that stuff will make a long lasting bearing for a light load and no heat application. Just a thought
