John Deere 60 gear shifter pulls out of gear

Hello, I have a John Deere 60 S/N 6012258 with a gear shifter issue. It can be shifted and driven but if you don't pay attention the shifter will work it's way up and pop out of gear. I can pull it straight up and move it freely without it switching any gears. Now I'm assuming that there is a collar or pin or snap ring or something loose or missing. I would love to fix it but I'm a little gun shy when it comes to transmission work. Can anyone tell me what I need to do or if it's an easy fix or if anyone has heard of this before. Thanks

There should be a snap ring, washer, and spring on the shift
rod. Remove 2 bolts under the dash. Remove shift quadrant.

Put the tranny in neutral before you remove the quadrant, makes putting back together easier, at least it did on my 50, good luck
