Removing a 530 Flywheel

I m finally getting to tearing into my 530 to repair the transmission...the bearings have a lot of play on the lower shaft. My flywheel is tight on the splines...what is the best way to pull it without damage?

Have you loosened up the bolts yet ? Most you can wiggle off once you get them loose. You can always hook a gear puller into the round openings in it. Equal pressure sometimes will help move them along.
Whatever you do DO NOT DRIVE wedges into the grooves to spread it apart. I had a helper do that once and broke a corner off the flywheel where the bolts go.

Yes, the bolts are loose. I haven t wedged anything in there yet, but I can see where it was done in the past. I will get a puller that will fit in the holes and try that.

If you don't have a puller you could put a wedge between the flywheel and the frame as close to the center as you can get and then bump the end of the crank with a heavy block to break it loose. Then it should slide off.

I got it off with the 2 jaw puller...tightened it up and one tap of a hammer on the puller screw got it going. I had blocks stacked up within 1/8" of the flywheel so I could use the puller to walk it right off the shaft with the puller. It s probably approaching the limit for what you want to man handle yourself. How heavy is the 1st reduction cover? Do I need an engine hoist?

1st red cover should be a lot lighter than the flywheel. Those usually need to be wrestled at a odd angle to get them off of many models.
So what is wrong with the 530 as it sounds like you are going in deep ?
I forgot to remind you to verify the index marks on the flywheel before removing it. Make sure you check the clutch driver too. Because if you can't find the marks it is a lot easier to just go ahead and mark it before removal so it goes back on the same way. Assuming it is on correct now ?

Yes, The flywheel marks were there and it was on correctly. I am going into the transmission because it growled in 4th & 2nd gear. I pulled the shift tower and found a chipped 2nd/5th gear...also looks like there is play in the bearings on the lower trans shaft when I rock the wheels. I really need to get the trans apart to see whats going on. Attached is a pic of the gear.

That's why I tell people to stop when you shift these. I've seen way too many broken/chipped teeth from speed shifters.
Look really close at your lower counter shaft bearings as I've seen several flaked out, but on the top side that is hard to see when installed.

I made some progress last night...I got the pulley assembly and right brake off. I think I found out where some of my drivetrain noise was coming from. The right brake housing was loose. I?m still going to pull the whole transmission apart to check everything.

Good news is the clutch parts all look great and the crank feels nice with no play in the bearings

Well since you are into it this far I would go ahead and pull the main bearing housings and put new seals in where the oil pressure comes through the main case to them. Been a few guys on here with 620 or 630 that had the rubber swell shut and cut off oil pressure. Some have posted pics on here where a house lamp nipple will fit inside to help stop future issues.
Also the oil seals for the RH side on the crankshaft I'd bet the old ones are hard ?
