Model 40 Idle issue

What would cause my model 40c engine to slowly speed up while set at idle? If I stop and idle the engine down it will slow right down and idle nicely and then slowly over a few minutes, the engine will speed up to nearly wide open, but the throttle lever stays put. Putting it in gear and driving will slow the engine back down.

First thing to check would be length of rod adjustment between the governor and carb.

Sounds like it is getting air in the intake some where. I would spray the carb down with wd40 when it starts to do this around the carbs mounting to the intake manifold and the carbs shaft where the linkage is hook to. Buy doing this it will suck in the wd 40 and seal the leak and will slow down if its leaking in the areas.
