2240 starter solenoid

Replaced starter solenoid on 2240 with a John Deere replacement solenoid. (although it subs to new number) Bosch starter. Seemed to push against starter lever. All the solenoid does is spin. Have had it out several times. Nothing changes. What am I missing?

My thought from viewing JD parts it appears solenoid needs to pull not push on lever fork(key 4) in order to push drive to engage flywheel ring gear.

If starter motor spins with solenoid correctly installed the clutch in Bendix is slipping and starter needs a new Bendix drive assembly. DW

Jim, holding that spring back while slipping the link over the lever was challenging, but that was it. ( Heres the detailed instructions from the service manual. "replace solenoid on starter" Not much help there!) It now cranks, but it stays hot, so have to pull the neg. battery feed to stop it. Guess it may have fried my switch. Thanks for the help.

Thanks for update. I'm glad you got solenoid installed correctly & my thinking was correct. On electrical drain I'll suggest to check alternator &/or regulator along with ign switch for a drain .
