Looking at a 5020 std.good shape good rubber. The owner said it developed a knock in the engine recently..what am I up against here?..and is 2000 a fair price for it?..thanks

You are up against either a minor problem or a serious expense. There may not be any in-between situations.

Is the noise a knock, a click, exhaust sound, or some other sound?

If the problem is cylinder related and loosing compression, crank the engine over with the fuel shut off. If one cylinder cranks faster that the others, due to compression loss, maybe a cracked piston, broken ring, etc.

Loosening the injector lines one at a time might isolate which cylinder is knocking and whether or not it is the injector.

Dissect the oil filter element and look for metal particles which would give clues as to where the metal particles are coming from. Bronze, aluminum, cast iron, steel, etc.

Monitor the oil pressure. A wrist pin knock should not affect oil pressure but a bad rod or main bearing probably would.

The knock could be rocker arm assembly related. Pull the valve cover and look for issues there.

Good luck. Did you mean $2000 or $20000?

When you open it, check the engine block right away for cracks between the bottom of the sleeves and trough the main bearings retaining bolts. A high pressure wash of the engine block show all the issues very well. I just disassemble a 3020 engine block that has 9 beyond repair cracks on the top deck that I only saw after power wash.

A Gaulding piston can cause a knock..the skirt gets worn on the lower sides and will let the piston "rock" in the bore

(quoted from post at 08:21:41 07/20/19) It would be long gone here at 2k even with a knock.
Ben

that might be the case but i see a lot with good rubber and tin knocking engine sell in that price range quite a bit.... so i guess some people are after them
