JD M Gas Cap

Coming back from a show this weekend the gas cap on my 1951 M blew off on the highway. The cap that was on it always fit loose and was the short style. What would be the "correct" cap for a 1951 M, the short style or the tall style? Are all these new replacement caps vented?
Thanks.

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]FUEL TANK AND FUEL FILTER[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the fuel cap (Key 5) for all year models is the "[i:654c4848f0]short style[/i:654c4848f0]".

Hope this helps.

Never found a definitive answer to that. Old dealer I knew back when I was young told me the tall cap didn't come out till the 40 came along. He was a dealer ages before they came out and still had one with a front end loader on it he used in the shop and on field repairs. I have a parts manual from 47 that shows the short cap. You would need one from each year they were made to see if the change actually came during M production. I do have M literature with pics showing a tall cap.

I have the short cap on my 49's. Just like the look better. One from a 65 F100 stepside is identical.

I am thinking the tall ones were the replacement part number ? Sort of like the recall IHC Farmall did with the caps for the H and M tractors years ago.
