Question, If The genny and VR is good and I hook a Volt meter to BAT on VR and the other lead to GD with tractor running should I get a reading? Had Columbus auto electric check out genny and VR. Said genny was good but VR was bad. Put new VR on and installed on tractor. Made sure of good ground. Still not charging. All help is greatly appreciated. Thank you much.

Good morning Rusty, good questions

1) "Question, If The genny and VR is good and I hook a Volt meter to BAT on VR and the other lead to GD with tractor running should I get a reading? YES and battery voltage not running but 13 to 14 or so if running at fast RPM if all is wired right and working ???????????????

YES Iffffffffffff the BAT terminal on the VR is wired to the ammeter (or even if BAT on VR somehow gets to hot battery post otherwise for that matter) and its continuous not open and its wired eventually to the battery ungrounded post, often via a wire to the starter/solenoid INPUT where the big battery cable attaches, or to battery itself? A volt meter on the BAT terminal on the VR should read hot battery voltage all the time (via its connections above) otherwise the genny cant get connected up with and deliver a charge.

If alls well and all connections above are in place at fast RPM a good genny and VR should raise battery voltage to at least 13 up to 14 volts subject to RPM and genny and battery.

YOU HAVE TO GET BATTERY VOLTAGE ON THE VR'S BAT TERMINAL or the gennys output cant charge the battery

Once you have polarized the genny and insure the VR has a good ground AND GET IT WIRED SO BAT ON VR IS HOT when running if you use a jumper to temporarily dead ground the gennys FLD post SHE SHOULD FULL CHARGE. If so but NOT otherwise, the VR is bad or not well grounded or is not wired correctly

NOTE it came original as POS Ground, how are you wired now ??????????

NOTE a volt meter on ground and the VR's GEN/ARM post would read the gennys output when shes running

CAUTION if a shop worked on the genny it may not be polarized at POS ground like your tractor was originally BE SURE TO POLARIZE THE GENNY BEFORE STARTING OR IF WRONG IT CAN DAMAGE THE VR

2) "Had Columbus auto electric check out genny and VR. Said genny was good but VR was bad. Put new VR on and installed on tractor. Made sure of good ground. Still not charging"

a) Hope you polarized the genny BEFORE starting or the VR may be damaged
b) See if it charges at fast RPM if you ground the gennys FLD post??????? If so but not otherwise as I said above the VR
is bad or not well grounded

SUMMARY you have to be wired right so BAT on VR is connected to battery,,,,,,,,,,Genny should be polarized to be safe,,,,,,,,,VR AND GENNY needs a good ground,,,,,,,,,VR needs to be compatible with your ground be it POS as original or NEG,,,,,,,,,,

Theres more but this is a start for now, post back any questions. Check out my in depth Troubleshooting Procedure linked below for more info

BAT on regulator should read battery voltage with engine off, and increase at least 10 percent when running and revved up.

Did you polarize generator? With engine off, battery connected, momentarily jumper from BAT terminal on regulator to ring or nut on ARM post on generator.

With it running, ground Field post on generator. If it now charges you have a problem on regulator side of the regulator assembly.

If still no charge, leave F grounded and jumper from Arm on generator to BAT on regulator. If it now charges the cut out relay in the regulator is either not closing or has poor contact. If still no charge you have bypassed the regulator and have either a generator or wiring problem.

Heres a wiring diagram which may help also

The man at Columbus auto electric said he polarized it pos gd. That matches the tractor. He had the vr on backwards and I turned it around. In doing so I had to unwire the vr. but I made sure I rewired it the same as it was.. I have a drawing of the circuit and it shows a fuse behind the dash. I can't determine if it would have an affect on this circuit if it was blown so I'm going to check that next. Thank you very much for your help.

Just to be on the safe side it wont hurt to go ahead and re polarize it. Normally that's done by using a jumper wire to momentarily flash jump from BAT on VR over to GEN/ARM and you should get a small spark

NOTE HOWEVER That wont polarize until you get hot battery voltage on the VR's BAT terminal. The genny cant charge the battery unless and until BAT on the VR is wired eventually to the ungrounded battery post in which case a meter on it will show battery voltage not running and if alls wired right and working 13 to 14 volts at fast running RPM.

Once you get voltage on the BAT terminal then you can try dead grounding the gennys FLD post when running to see if it charges then ??????? If so, genny is okay and it must be a bad VR or its not well grounded or somethings not wired right.

FYI BAT on VR to ammeter (always hot voltage if wired right and alls well)
GEN/ARM on VR to gennys ARM post
FLD on VR to gennsy FLD post

Will the generator run as a motor ? Remove the fan belt and press the cutout contacts together .
If she won t spin , she is busted or not wired correctly .

Many many thanks to all who responded to my problem. I now know that nothing will happen until I get voltage to BAT terminal. Almost feel like an expert on this subject thanks to all of you. You guys are the best.

Original wiring did not have a fuse. Some one must have added a fuse for extra protection. Where is the fuse electrically in the wiring?

You state "I now know that nothing will happen until I get voltage to BAT terminal"

AMEN You got it now, get it wired correct so there's battery voltage on the VR's BAT terminal that way the genny might actually work and begin charging the battery

Rusty, to start looking and tracing of how battery voltage gets to the BAT terminal on the VR (gotta get that before genny is going to charge battery) its something like this:

BAT on VR to Ammeters LOAD terminal,,,,,,,,,Ammeters other SUPPLY terminal to starter solenoid (where big battery cable attaches),,,,,,,,,big battery cable up to battery. The ammeter has to be a closed continuous low resistance circuit side to side.

You're absolutely right BandD. I was looking at the drawing for the 520 lp gas. My mistake. I discovered the other drawing. Thank you.
