Fixing to get started on trying to breath life in to a 54 model JD 60 I brought home couple of weeks back, but I need to clean the gas tank, it?s sat out in the weather no telling how many years, tank is cruddy and rusty looking. Have removed several Ford tractor tanks to clean over the years with no problems but this JD 60 looks like it?s gonna be a pain. Looks like nose piece will need to be removed first and then disconnect the steering shaft and remove tank and hood as one unit. Wonder if there?s an easier way? Was thinking to just leave all intact on tractor and fill tank with vinegar or soda pop and let sit several days and drain it by removing sediment bowl, wash it out then with water and then blow air in to tank to dry it, I know, sounds stupid and I should take the time to do it right , just trying to take a short cut. Any suggestions on an easier way than a complete tear down to clean it?

You pretty much have the procedure right. I like to remove them as many times especially if they sat out, the top of the tank can be real rusty or even rusted out. If caught before they rust out I clean them and paint the outside to protect them. Mice like to build nests up on top too.

I just finished cleaning and lining the gas tank on my 49 A and did my 50 B last summer. I get a kit from TP tools that is marketed as a gas tank sealing kit. This works great and you have to put some abrasive in the tank while cleaning. Did not use any on the B and could not get it as clean as the A. Using BBs works great and are easy to remove, just strap it on and drive it around with cleaning agent and BBs, gets it shiny clean. It is a three step process and excess can be saved and reused. Yes you will need to remove the tank, not a big deal.
