10-20 series transmission discussion

So, i noticed a pretty heated discussion going on. its about whether or not the 10-20 series tractors had a 3rd reverse. Between 4th and 7th. A guy posted a video of it on his 4010 maybe? anyway, some folks said syncro was wore out, others said theirs would do that from the factory.

I dont know enough about part numbers in the parts catalogs to say anything one way or the other.

What do you smart guys think, and yes, im pointing to you TimS, TxJim, Mr thinker(s), and a couple other fellas but cant think of their names....

Im pretty interested the truth here.
 
3010 & 4010 had 3 reverses. Pretty fast!! 3020 & 4020 did not.
Don't see a reason for a heated discussion.
 
The 10 series had 3 reverse gears but when the 20 series came out JD decided the third reverse was to fast. They put a tab in the shift column so they wouldn't go into the third reverse. The gear is still in the transmission. With much wear at all the 20 series will go past that tab and go into third reverse.

people like to argue on forums....none of it mattered to me.

Kansas4010, im gonna try that on my dads 4010 and see what happens.

IIRC 10 & 20 series JD rowcrop tractors with Syncro-range trans actually have 4 reverses if one would cut the drum & dash to accommodate shift lever going far enough down. Yes JD engineers decided 3rd reverse was too fast(unsafe) so it was blocked on 20 & 30 series Syncro-range trans.
 
We had a 4020 that had the 3ed reverse.
Was not on the shift lable but it would
slide right in.
 
Yes the 3010/4010 had 3 reverses,,if you buy a new quadrant for the shifter it may only be cut for 2 reverses,, you can cut a notch out of the quadrant on a 3020/4020 and get the third reverse, I have a 72-3020 that I cut to get the third reverse,, we trim mow with it and a 250 side mount mower,, we trim some in 4th gear and with the extra reverse there is a reverse in the forth gear stall that helps when we need to back up a bit to let the cycle clear..and yes it is fast..
 
Dad's 3020 is like that. Wore just enough that it goes right in the third reverse. Real handy when loading round bales out in the field. If a 3010 -4010 does not have a third reverse it is because sometime during it's life the dash quadrants were updated as all left the factory with it. Tom
 
just so i understand then, the the 10 and 20 series have a 3rd reverse in them and not accessible due to the block piece in the shifter.

My 5020 is currently not running, replacing the pump and some other upgrades, but would the 5010,5020, 2510, 2520, and 6030 have it as well?
 
The 2510 is technically only a 10 series in
name only. It was made when JD was making
the 20 series. It has the same upgrades of
the early 20's so from factory it only had
two reverse gears. I have no experience
with the 5010' 20's or 6030 so I would only
be guessing.
 
Yes on the 2510/2520,, not sure it will work out on the 5010/5020 and it's not the matter of it "being in there" it's the matter of allowing the linkage to "Let" it in there. The top shaft shifting controls a high and low speed with a reverse,, the lower shaft has 4 speeds to direct that flow on to the ring gear/wheels.
 
My phrasing was bit off.

I guess i never thought about them ol tractors having the ability to go into a 3rd reverse. Guess i need to get my 5020 running and see what can happen HAHAH

The 20 series was blocked out but the
third reverse was there after the
quadrant got worn a little you could put
it in 7th reverse in the 20 series.
 
Our 4020 has 3rd reverse it?s not that fast I used it
all the time hauling round bales from the field to the
stack yard
