Tach on 855 CUT

Tach has been stuck at 500 rpm when shut off for a while, and reading 500 too high when running. Yesterday, it gave a big death quiver, needle fluttering all over the place, and now for the most part it's pegged at max cw position. I'm wondering if the problem is the tach or the tach drive cable. Being a CUT, it looks like everything in there is pretty crowded. I don't have enough knuckles to take something out needlessly. Anybody experienced similar 855 tach problems? Turn out to be tach or cable? Seems I remember that cars, when they still had the mechanical speedometer drive cables, the problem was usually in the cable.

Got her apart. What fun! Cable looks OK but while apart, I'm going back together with a new one. Problem seems to be in tach. $100 off e-bay. $165 at local JD dealer.

Replaced both cable and tach. All is well now. The job takes a lot of disassembly because, really the fuel tank has to come out.
