I am cleaning up a 1948 M that has sat in the shed for 25ish years. The inside of the transmission housing is lined with black slim that does not wash out with a diesel fuel flush. There is a port on the back wall that goes into the diff housing, so likely the same slim is in there too. What would be the best way to visually inspect the diff and to flush it out?

Take a look at the [b:654c4848f0]FINAL DRIVE[/b:654c4848f0] diagram below.

Note the final drive pan (Key 37) and pipe plug (Key 38).

Take a look at the photos below.

Remove the final drive filler plug and drain plug.

Once the old oil has drained, replace the drain plug.

Add approximately 3 1/2 pints of diesel or other cleaner level to the filler hole.

Take a ride around the farm, then drain the diesel/cleaner.

You might consider removing the final drive pan to visually inspect the final drive.

Hope this helps.

[ Thanks that info does help.
Filled the trans with diesel and ran in thrid gear for 5 minites three times. then removed the trans cover. The sludge still hasnt flushed out. Does fluid from the trans and diff cases get down into the final drives?

Does this stuff smell like sulfur ? JD used to have a gear lube that was called SCL ( sulfur chlorine lead ) That is GREAT stuff ! It was a black gear lube it clings and creeps and protects. Any tranny I tore apart with that stuff in it always seemed to not be rusted. Hard to clean the stains off the insides of the gear cases. Some of it can get really thick too.

Sorry for this reply; completely misread/misinterpreted your question.

Definitely a "[i:654c4848f0]senior moment[/i:654c4848f0]" on my part.

Now where are my keys?

I have been into the final drives on a MT, which is a bit different, but unless you had multiple failed seals and gaskets and an overfilled transmission case I cannot see how it would get into the final drives. On the final drives pop off the bottom covers, get new gaskets, clean up the services with a wire wheel and use some Indianhead gasket shellac or the similar and then fill with new gear oil. You may end up with some additional leaks from the final drive quills but I usually wait until I see those leaks to mess with those because they have shims behind them to set the right clearance on the bearings. I have not had luck getting those to re-seal properly.

Not much surfer smell but is black and thick. Is this stuff better left there or do I need to get it out?

It sounds like you drain and flushed all you can so far ? If so add in the new gear oil and go on. You will never get it all out.

Thanks for the info. Flushed 5 galons of varsol and diesel through it with an air gun with a liquid pickup. Didnt come completly clean but much better.
Another question; When I put oil in the fan bearing housing , it ran out just as fast. Does this mean the bearing and/or seals are shot? Putting on a new rad so would not want to see it get chewed up.
