how to get hydraulic cylinder apart

I have a john deere 482C forklift with a lift cylinder that just started leaking out the top. The cylinder is 8 ft tall. I removed the cylinder and layed it across the forks on my shop forklift. I removed the end cap to remove the cylinder rod. I can't get the rod out of the cylinder. When I removed the cap just below the treads is a sleeve of some kind that looks like it is made of brass. I can move the rod back and forth easily, but it won't come out of the cylinder bore. It hits the sleeve on the end and stops. I fastened a chain to the end of the ram, pushed it back and gave it a good jerk. It hits the end sleeve and that's it. There's a weld around the cylinder about 3 inches from the end. I'm wondering if maybe the sleeve is a supposed to move. I have a seal kit ordered. I went to a local JD dealer, but they have never worked on one. The picture the parts guy showed me wasn't much help, but it showed a seal below the sleeve. A repair manual is over 100 bucks and I don't know if it contains anything of use.

Does the cylinder version you have use the retaining bolt, Key #7, and have you removed it?

Yes,it has that bolt and I removed it. My cylinder is a little bit different. The end is flat with two holes to faster it to the boom.
