630 Flywheel Reinstall

I removed the flywheel on my 630 to replace bushings in the governor idler gear. Before I removed it I marked where it sat on the crankshaft with a sharpie. I reinstalled it this afternoon and noticed that it didn?t quite go all the way back in to line up with my sharpie marks. It might be about a 1/16 inch off. The V marks lined up. What might be causing this? Shouldn?t the oil slinger slot be good since I have the V marks lined up? I have done nothing else or removed anything else. Also, do I need to check endplay for just taking the flywheel off and back on?

The flywheel IS how you adjust the endplay. Engage the clutch and force the crank to the left. Then set the end play to .006-.010". With the clamp portion of the flywheel loose, there might be some slop in the splines after 50 years... Once you tighten the clamp bolts, it should be OK.

The slinger can move 360 degrees, you align the slinger to the button/tab on the flywheel. And tightening the large tin nut should move the flywheel in if tab and slinger are lined up.

Not to hijack your post, but what tool are you using for the 3 inch lock nut? A wrench that large is expensive for basically a one time use.

Before my ownership of the tractor someone had made two tiny notches in the outer flange of that lock nut on opposite ends. I put a flat head screwdriver in one of those notches and gently hammered it until it
was loose.
