Unstyled "A" valves getting enough oil?

Hey,

Recently woke my Great Grandfathers Unstyled A up from about a decade long slumber.

Since it sat for a time, we have had a sticky valve issue.

I removed the valve cover and the oiling pipe going from the valve cover back to the governor housing so I could oil the valves by hand and get them unstuck.

It has slowly began to run better and better every time we start it, with the valve(s) sticking less and less.

But, I noticed, with the valve cover and oil pipe off, there is barely any oil coming out of the oil pipe hole in the governor housing.

After a good 15 minutes or, running at half throttle, it will finally start to "spit" a little oil out the hole. After about a half hour, only about half a shot glass worth of oil comes out.

I am just wondering what is considered a normal amount of oil flow going to the head. I am not familiar with the oiling system on the early 2cylinders. Just how does it work? Does/Will having the valve cover and oil pipe in place somehow help draw the oil to the head better?

I would like to take the tractor out, work it a little...and help clear it's lungs out after sitting so long. I just want to double check with someone on here more familiar with these and make sure the valves are getting enough oil first.

It doesn't take a lot of oil to keep rockers oiled but maybe a little more than what you are saying. Did you change the oil and filter before you started the
tractor or is this the oil that has set for 10 years? I would flush the system with kerosene and put all new oil and filter in if you haven't already.
 
Can't really speak to unstyled since I've never been inside one, but on others the oil supply to the rockers is interrupted purposely to slow down oil delivery by having it applied at full pressure on one side of the oil pump drive shaft and a small hole drilled thru the drive shaft, with the oil supply line to the rockers coming off the 'hole' side of the oil pump drive shaft. If the shaft is not at the right height it won't line up and if the shaft has been replaced without a hole drilled in it you will also have a minimum amount of oil showing up. Previous owner might have used one that has the hole at a different height too. It would be wise to pull the oil pump and check for that hole thru the drive shaft.

I'll agree with you don't have much oil and it should be a drop per second range at least.
 
In the governor housing there is a trough to catch oil and let it drain to the valves through the pipe. It takes time to fill before it runs to the valves. Kind of a splash system. Ron MN
 
Also they don't get much oil just puttering around . Run full throttle for awhile and you will see more oil flow .
 
I have had some on them were the oil trough in the governor housing has a build up of oil slug in that trough an it don't catch all the oil that slinging around in there. On the governor hole remove the rubber seal there and spray wd 40 in there and get a small wire and put a small hook on it and see if u can just clean it up some. U will know if it is not getting enf oil because they well start to squeak in there.
