Is it possible to get the transmission gears out of sync by removing/installing both bull gears with the clutch removed?

I had to remove them to replace the rear axle bearings and the clutch is out of it at the same time. I was told that if the transmission gears get turned when installing the axles and bull gears that it can cause the transmission to be in a gear other than where you have the shifter set. I don't see that being able to happen, just wondering if I'm missing something?

I have put axle seals in several A?s and B?s and never had a problem. Now if you pull the top cover with the gear shift then that can happen.

Thanks buster, that was my thinking also. But I thought if I was missing something it would be a lot easier to find out before I seal this back up. How far do you run the castle nut up on the bull gear? Would you go all the way till it stops and then back it off a 1/4 turn?

I draw them up tight then loosen the axle nuts to remove all free play and not have any preload on the bearings. Specs. are to have some free play I forget how much. I set them at zero or near zero. Doing this before installing the outer felts and retainers you can feel the play. The felts make it too tight to feel.

Mike - I'm not a mechanic, but I read that you should smack the outer end of the axle with a big hammer during the nut tightening process. I found some lost adjustment when I did that.

I does make sense as it could help make sure all is seated good. I don't think I have heard of doing it before though.

Thanks for the info, before removing them, I ran them in expecting them to be tight and was able to draw the axle in about a turn or so without any effort when I stopped. So I wasn't sure how far to go when reinstalling them? I removed both bull gears & axles and replaced one inner bearing and both axle seals (bad seals was the reason for removing axles) The outer bearings are fine, unfortunately, the felts on this are between the outer bearing and the hub and I guess I'd have to replace the bearings in order to replace the felts? I packed new grease in around the felts and hope the new seals will take care of any leaking? I'm open to any suggestions & appreciate the help.
