JD 40 Clutch

I have recently replaced the clutch on my JD 40T The clutch grabs and starts off with a jerk
My guess is I need to reface the fly wheel but am not looking forward to breaking the tractor down again
Does anyone know of a trick that might make the clutch work smooth. Thanks

Now is a poor time to figure out the flywheel mite have needed a touchup!

On the other hand having the "clutch finger height" correct has a lot to do with having a smoothly operating clutch.

I have no info as to if the finger height can be adjusts, or what the "spec" mite be, but if I were in your shoes I would be looking in that area.

The pressure plate fingers should have been adjusted/checked if the unit does not have the continuous running pto. Here is a copy of Service Bulletin 286.

You will need the JD-7 guage to adjust the fingers. Lavoy Wilcox (jdcrawlers.com) makes a reproduction. Not very expensive.

The service bulletin says to exercise the pressure plate before and after adjusting. Is this something that can be accomplished without splitting the tractor

That's just pushing down on the fingers. The clutch pedal is doing that now. What they mean is before and after using the guage.

You could exercise the fingers by pushing the clutch pedal. However, I don't believe you can check or do the adjustment of the fingers without splitting the tractor.

Thanks guys for all the info, I guess I have a new project. I need to get it fixed before it flips me out of the seat
I will see if I can locate a gauge. Thanks again
