R pup engine backfiring and stalling underload

My pup engine when loaded for starting diesel requires playing with choke backfires stumbles stalls out
choke brings back
Curious what thoughts are on magneto points needing attention before I remove hood to get at magneto

Possibly Spark....probably FUEL problem....Lack of fuel..........

Owned a JD "R"...1975> 1980...

Mine does the same thing, I found if I keep the pony fuel tank mostly full there is no problem. Don't know why everything clean ect just the way it likes to run.

Turns out condenser weak spark very yellow replaced points and condenser nice blue spark now pup runs very well.
Thanks for help did pull carb apart and give a good cleaning also have gone to high octane gas as low octane gets stale real quick.
