wanting to learn about 3 points

Im sure its already in this forum somewhere but I cant seem to find it. Im looking to learn about and specifically the differences between the different john deere 3 point hitch configurations (800, 801, ect.). Then perhaps which tractors they were made for as well. Thanks in advance.

There are 3 versions of this hitch, 800, 800A, and 801. The 800 and 800A have no draft control and simply lift the implement up and down. The difference is the original 800 hitch has a crank on the right side lift link for leveling the implement. The 800A has a flip handle located on the screw rods on each of the lift links. The crank on the original 800 hitch could hit the seat while lifting under some conditions, so it was improved to the 800A hitch. The 801 hitch has a mechanical draft control system built into the top link and is the final version of the hitch. The draft control on the 801 did not work particularly well and the daft control rods from the lift arms to the top link bell-crank were usually removed and the hitch was used like the older units. I think the 800A is the best of the 3.
 
I'm not sure if John Deere was the first to offer it but the 3rd Hand where the link extended to hook up the implement was a great feature as far as I'm
concerned,I have it on both mine.

What is the reason for the lift cranks being swapped around on "John W" and "Vernon"? Is it the difference in width of the implements you mount them to?

"John W" had a near complete 3 point when we bought the tractor.



"John W" was bought primarily to power the KRONE 260 baler and the 3 point was removed.

"Vernon" was bought primarily to power the John Deere 350 sickle mower.

Take a look at the 3 point that was on "Vernon" when we bought the tractor.

The lift links were too long to adjust the 350 sickle mower.

Bought an assortment of 3 point parts and installed them on "Vernon" to accommodate the sickle mower.

Robbed the lift links with locking straps from "Big John" our 55 Model 70 Diesel for adjusting the height on the sickle mower.

Got plenty of spare parts now for just about any combination necessary.
 

Thanks for all the great info. It seems the 800, 800A and 801's were mostly used in the early '50s. What were the names of the hitches in the later '50s - '60s, say for the 20 and 30 series tractors?

I don't think the later ones had a name or number as by then they were pretty much standard. You just ordered it as an option. Or deleted it.
