Head gasket on 520

Leaking coolant around head gasket. How difficult is it to replace? If I take the head off can rings be replaced without removing the block? Tractor had been setting a while before I got it and it?s old like me so I guess it?s gonna need fixing.

Yes you can, but plan on using a Ridge Reamer of correct size and Hone the bores well..

The Head is a little heavy and awkward, and would be easier to handle if the Manifolds are removed..

For the minimal extra work . You will be happier with the end results by removing the block .
If you can get the manifold bolts out. Use new bolts and coat with high temp anti seize .

Relative to phrase "old like me": A "few" years ago I had to get the head off of my 70, which is a lot tighter and heavier situation. The manifolds had to come off anyway, so I found a long piece of high quality and fully rusty scrap bar and bolted it to the head where the manifolds came off. With this high quality tool bolted on and sticking out a couple of feet each side, I and another old phart could slide it forward off the studs and out the left side over the frame, then he could some around and get "his" end again to help set it down before either of us got hurt. As far as the block, you're on your own! Good luck; you have a nice tractor there!

If you need to replace the intake manifold set, be sure to inspect the passage alignment..

I have sometimes needed to open the main passages 1/2" just to match the passages in the Head..!!

I do like to Block the Rt side of the heat crossover with a Stainless plate the thickness of the gaskets....

Clean it up, polish up the combustion chambers, remove obstructions, mill the Head .030....just Say-in..( they sure do run well, afterwards...)!!

Green Magazine for May will have a write up regarding a 620/630 iirc that was just blue printed . LP Pistons, fresh grind on the cam and lifters , three angle valve job and some port matching/blending/deburing. Don t know if the aircleaner has the dry filter conversion or not .
Just speculating but I am certain it will have more power than a stock 720/730. And not be grumpy to start or operate .
