Oil Slinging

Just picked up a John Deere B hand start. It slings oil all over the hood, ground and me while running--especially at low idle. I checked the oil level petcock and was over two quarts full. Drained out the extra but it still slings but not near as bad. Would that have ruined the seal behind the flywheel? Should I run it some more or replace?

Seal will keep leaking so I would plan on replacing it. Check your engine oil for a gas smell. Your carb may be leaking gas into the crankcase oil causing the
overfill. Or could be operator error. Jim.

No gas smell that I can tell. I am hoping it was just operator error. Can the powertrol leak into the engine oil? I noticed it was empty.

I called Deere and can get the cork seal but the housing gasket is "obsolete".

If I attempt to make one, should I use paper or cork? I will need to buy the material also.

I would make one from gasket paper. They were not that thick of material. Make sure you use a feeler gauge to center the housing around the slinger as you tighten it down. You do not want it to rub.
