What s your opinion on installing a head gasket on my 4240?
Do I coat it with the copper adhesive or install it dry?
Per my John Deere service manual it states torque the head to 105ft-lbs initially and then go back and retorque to between 117-143 ft-lbs, big difference here....
Now, Reliance states that I should torque to 95ft-lb (grade 12.9 bolts) and the turn an additional 90 degrees. This is alot more torque then what Deere is stating?
Another thing, I originally thought my head was cracked as I could not seem to get the head to seal. I realized almost half the head bolts are a little too long as I can see the bottom of the bolts are flattened and shinny. Anyone else ever seen this?
I have had this tractor fir about 15 years or so. When I rebuilt this a year ago the head was planned, maybe it was planned prior to me aquirring it. Maybe the Reliance bolts were just a little to long.
I ended up cutting about 3/32" off of the bolts.
